Week 19:  Square

Continuing on the theme of experimenting with aspect ratios, this week we practiced shooting in that Instagram-favorite, the square.

After being cooped up inside the house for several days, P. and B. were delighted to go for a walk once the snowfall finally stopped.

Week 18: Medium-Large Format Aspect Ratios

This week, we experimented with aspect ratios larger than the usual 4:6. In this case, the larger aspect ratio allowed me to more fully capture the scene in downtown Portland.

Week 17:  Creative Use of a Specialty Lens

This week’s challenge is to use a specialty lens in a non-traditional way. In this image, I made a wide-angle close-up of my son’s menagerie.

Week 16:  Portrait

This week’s challenge is to take a portrait using a “non-traditional” portrait lens. In this case, I used a wide angle to capture the full scene at the art bar.

Week 15: Exclusion

This week’s goal is to focus narrowly on a subject, filling the frame and excluding much of the environment.  Similarly, B. focuses narrowly on his “raft,” navigating his little friends safely through the rough waters of black-eyed peas.

Week 14: Inclusion

For this week’s compositional exercise, we explore theme of inclusion — often using a wide angle lens to include much carefully considered content within the frame. I took this photo with the widest angle lens I’ve ever used: a rented 16-35mm, cranked to its widest.  This super wide angle allowed me to include the full 360 aquarium in my image.

Week 13: Photographer’s Choice

To close out the year, we’ve loosened the reins on our usual compositional guidelines. Instead, I’m posting one of my favorite photos of the year. Early morning, at the beach, all is quiet but for the “plunk”-ing of rocks being thrown in the water.

Week 12: Curved lines

This week’s compositional theme explores curved lines… much like the curved train track spanning our living and dining room this week, always leading back to our little guy.

Week 11: Diagonal Lines

“Under the bridge, and over the dam, looking for berries, berries for jam.”  Well, doesn’t seem to be any jam here, but certainly plenty of diagonal lines, which suits this week’s theme.
